Grant Will Provide Scholarships for Philadelphia and Alabama Area Students From Single-Parent Households

Philadelphia, PA – The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) today announced a $10,000 grant from Perryman Building Construction and Services, of Philadelphia, PA to establish the Bessie I. Perryman Construction Education Scholarship. The program will provide scholarships to empower disadvantaged youth pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Construction Management and/or Finance to realize their dreams of a college education. The scholarship is available to high school seniors about to enter college who are from single parent households and reside either in Philadelphia, PA and its surrounding suburbs or in the state of Alabama. Students will be considered who have grade point averages (GPAs) of 2.9 or better.

The Bessie I. Perryman Construction Education Scholarship provides access to higher education for high-achieving students to attend either Tuskegee University, Spelman College or Morehouse College –three of UNCF’sschools; or Alabama State College, Cheyney University, Lincoln University and Delaware State University.

Angelo R. Perryman, President & CEO of Perryman Building and Construction Services, Inc. is a native of Alabama and received his Business degree from Auburn State College. Perryman says he worked with UNCF to create the scholarship, because the United Negro College Fund is a well respected organization that supports students with demonstrated financial needs and potential for outstanding academic and leadership achievement. He says, “In my efforts to grow bigger and better, I knew there was a process, and that process tied back to education. My mother always encouraged me to achieve any goal with what she coined as her three Ps –pray, plan, proceed. I owed her something for believing in me, and this is one way of repaying her for service as a teacher, community advocate and good citizenship… She remains commited to service.”

Peryman’s father, Jimmie Lee Perryman, Sr. founded Perryman Building and Construction in Evergreen, Alabama in 1961. Angelo Perryman says his father’s philosophy was simple;a quality job performed by quality people always counts. This straightforward philosophy was the source from which his father’s company successes grew and that his son’s also grow. Ironically, Angelo Peryman’sscholarship contribution to UNCF matches the personal savings and family loans he raised to get his business up and running eight years ago. Today his company is recognized as one of the fastest growing, privately held companies in the ten-county Philadelphia region. Perryman Building and Construction Services has completed interiors, building and general construction projects for University of West Chester School of Performing Arts, U.S. Airways, University of PA, J. Caleb Boggs Federal Courthouse, Willow Grove Naval Air Force Station, Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, the Philadelphia Eagles Organization, Wachovia National Bank and the Enterprise Center of West Philadelphia.

In 2003 and 2004, Perryman Building and Construction Services was designated by Philadelphia 100®, as one of the fastest growing, privately- held companies in the Greater Philadelphia Region.
